Autonomous restaurant startup Appetronix has appointed Heather Wilkie as Chief Financial Officer, bringing a foodservice finance heavyweight on board as the company readies a Series A raise and pushes toward broader deployment of its fully robotic, zero-employee restaurant units across North America.
Wilkie arrives with direct knowledge of the company she is joining. During seven years at Compass Group Canada — the world's largest contract foodservice operator — she developed innovation partnerships with more than 50 third-party organizations, including Appetronix, before advancing into executive leadership in Business Transformation. In that role she oversaw more than 100 project implementations spanning 600-plus commercial kitchens. Before Compass, she served as finance lead of Deloitte's Canadian Consulting practice and sat on its Canadian Consulting Executive Committee.
The Technology on the Ground
Appetronix builds what it calls restaurants-in-a-box: patented, food-grade robotic systems that handle the full back-of-house workflow — portioning, cooking, plating, and cleaning — with no on-site staff required. The company's first commercial deployment went live in June 2025 as a Donatos Pizza unit at Columbus International Airport, operated in partnership with HMSHost, the world's largest airport food-and-beverage concessionaire. The company has since expanded to multiple cuisine platforms and continues to accumulate patents on its robotic systems. For hospitality operators evaluating labor costs and throughput in high-traffic venues, the model represents a direct answer to persistent staffing pressure in QSR and travel-hub foodservice.
Scaling Toward Series A
With a commercialized product in the field, Appetronix is now building the financial infrastructure to support rapid unit deployment. Nipun Sharma, Co-Founder and CEO of Appetronix, framed Wilkie's hire in operational terms: she has "scaled complex foodservice operations across hundreds of kitchens, and was among the first to identify the potential of our technology while running the innovation team at Compass." Sharma confirmed the company is preparing for its Series A in the coming months.
Wilkie was equally direct about her rationale. "The leadership team is strong, the strategy around next-generation QSR is clear, and there is real start-up energy behind it," she said. "Combining that momentum with a commercialized product already operating in the field made this an opportunity I was excited to take on."
The hire fits a broader pattern in kitchen automation and robotics funding as investors continue to back technologies that promise to reduce labor dependency in quick-service and travel-food contexts. Airport and transit-hub venues are proving an early proving ground for autonomous units because of high cover counts, predictable menus, and acute labor scarcity. Operators watching ghost kitchen and dark kitchen economics will recognize Appetronix's fully automated back-of-house model as a logical extension of the same efficiency thesis.
